Exquisitely simple! Carla's has the eponymous owner serving fabulously plump prawns in a simply delicious sauce. The starter mussels were also fabulous. Fresh in a light coriander, garlic, hint of chilli sauce. Menu only has 6 items but if you love seafood, then you will not be disappointed. We had a memorable meal in this quaint setting there, and hope you have the same.

What a vibey place! Pure luck really, we just happened upon perhaps the best eatery in Muizenberg, Cape Town, Africa, the World. Just minutes after we found our table in the window, this tiny restaurant was full. We watched as several loving couples were turned away… “Sorry for you!” Rooted in her ancestral culinary home of Mozambique (read Portugal), Carla’s food is amazing! Got to say we just ate the best meal EVER! …And we’ve been around (just saying). Mads had prawns (well, it’s pretty much either that or chicken) and was speechless (not a bad thing). I went for chicken peri peri. OMG, two HUGE PIECES OF CHICKEN, ½ a breast and a whole leg, coated in a ‘to die for sauce’ and served with good chips (fries) too. The limited choice on the menu is perfect, no time wasted wondering what shall I have. We never actually saw a menu, drinks arrived, food arrived. What a blessing! Cash Only, so be aware, 5 stars (deserves 10) We will return!

Such a lovely restaurant and experience! Carla was very attentive & it was great chatting with her at the end of the meal. Its BYO (no corkage), we ordered the mussels to start these were SO good, the broth that the mussels were in was so tasty. We also ordered prawns for main (they only have prawns or peri peri chicken) and these were huge! They came in a delicious sauce & a choice of rice or chips. Even the bread & butter was delicious, it was so fluffy & soft! Lovely atmosphere instead, very personal & intimate.

My wife and I visited Carla’s for the first time a few weeks ago. Not knowing what to expect, we arrived early and were the first to be seated. At first, we were a little concerned that the place might stay empty, but it didn’t take long before it filled up completely. Before the rush, we overheard Carla talking to the chef about how many tables had reserved the Peri Peri Chicken. Moments later, she came over and told us there was only one portion left for the night. We quickly claimed it, and we’re so glad we did. The service, delivered by Carla herself, was impeccable. For starters, we shared the mussels. Then came the showstoppers: the Peri Peri Chicken and a full portion of prawns. Every single bite was phenomenal. Carla clearly knows her way around flavour, and I wouldn’t be surprised if those recipes had been passed down through generations. The atmosphere was amazing too; warm, relaxed, and full of character. Most of the tables seemed to be regulars, chatting with Carla like old friends. Many lingered long after finishing their meals, soaking in the vibe. I’d been told that Carla’s is a Muizenberg institution, and now I can see exactly why.

Note: cash only We had the mussel starter, and LM prawns + peri peri chicken for mains. All were very tasty and cooked perfectly. Strangely, the rolls that come with the mussels are not included in the price. Just a surprise on your bill Has got cute, romantic vibes with the small size of the place and candle on your table. Corkage / BYO wine option available.

A Hidden Gem – Like dining at a friend’s home ... This charming little Mozambique Portuguese restaurant is a true hidden gem. Quirky, old-fashioned, and full of character, it feels more like being invited into someone's home than dining out. The owner herself, Carla, welcomes and serves you, creating a warm and personal experience from the moment you arrive. The menu is small but the emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. The prawns were outstanding—plump, juicy, and full of flavor—while the chicken was unbelievably tender. Carla's special Mozambique sauce adds the perfect touch of spice and richness to the dishes. A great bonus is that you can bring your own wine without having to pay corkage. The moment we arrived, Carla whisked away our special bottle and promptly returned with it opened alongside a bucket of ice - a special touch! Adding to the old-school charm, bills are handwritten, and it’s cash-only, so be sure to come prepared. If you're looking for an intimate dining experience with authentic flavours, genuine hospitality, and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, this spot is an absolute must-visit.

Lovely atmosphere. That was our favourite element. The prawns were also very fresh and very tasty. Normally I prefer to have a bit more flavour in my rice, but after eating it with the prawns, I understood why the rice was plain. It doesn’t detract from the very fresh taste, as it normally would. I can say these are some of the best prawns I’ve had.
